Calgary-based Userful Corporation announced that for a limited time it will be giving away two-user licenses for its Desktop Multiplier software. Desktop Multiplier enables a single computer running the Linux operating system to provide multiple independent workstations to multiple users at the same time, with each user workstation comprising a keyboard, monitor and mouse.
Free two-user licenses to be distributed in this promotion will enable desktop Linux users with a standard dual-head video card to add another workstation by simply plugging in a spare monitor, USB mouse and keyboard.
"Desktop Multiplier fulfills the desires of Linux users who want to take advantage of the versatile multi-user Linux platform to provide up to ten independent user desktops," says Tim Griffin, president of Userful. "The free two-user giveaway will let Linux users double the utility and value of their existing computer hardware investments without significant additional cost."
On a standard PC using up to five dual-head video cards, 10 monitors, 10 USB keyboards and 10 mice, Userful's Desktop Multiplier creates up to 10 independent workstations, with the inputs and outputs of each station isolated from the others. In this way, up to ten users can work on independent desktops private from all other users.
Many people already have two monitors connected to their computer. This software gives them the ability to share this computer. This is particularly helpful over the holliday season when friends and family are visiting from out of town. "It's like having a free computer for Christmas," says Griffin.
