pemurray@interrasys.com wrote: Bruce, Excellent and insightful article!! Sybase has a fabulous product in PowerBuilder. It is a shame that developers are under pressure to move away from it. Your note that there may not be enough PowerBuilder developers is a chicken and egg problem for Sybase. Sybase needs to be agressive in several areas to reverse the tide. 1) The pricing has to change. Would it not be better to have many thousands of people buying it for half of its current list price rather than rely on a h...

Creator of Splashtop Instant-On Technology Joins Linux Foundation
DeviceVM to Expand Linux' Reach to 30 Percent of All PCs Worldwide

The Linux Foundation (LF), the nonprofit organization dedicated to accelerating the growth of Linux, has announced that DeviceVM has become its newest member.

DeviceVM is the creator of the award-winning Splashtop(TM) instant-on platform, which is powered by Linux. Splashtop allows users to access the Internet and their favorite desktop applications within seconds of turning on the machine, rather than waiting long minutes for a full boot-up.

Linux-based Splashtop has been pre-installed by the major manufacturers on more than 10 million PCs worldwide. DeviceVM estimates that by the end of 2010, approximately 30 percent of all PCs worldwide will ship with Splashtop -- and thereby, Linux -- pre-installed.

"People don't know it, but the Linux desktop has arrived -- and at its own speed," said Cliff Miller, chief strategy officer at DeviceVM. "Splashtop boots up and gets you online so fast you don't even have time to say 'operating system!' Behind the scenes, of course, it's been the Linux community and our work with them that made instant-on possible. It's entirely appropriate for the Linux Foundation to take a bow for successes like this."

As the Linux Foundation's newest member, DeviceVM already participates in the Moblin project and contributes to Linux at the kernel level. DeviceVM will also participate in Linux Foundation events and conferences, such as the widely anticipated LinuxCon, occurring September 21 - 23, 2009 in Portland, Oregon (http://events.linuxfoundation.org/events/linuxcon).

"DeviceVM is introducing millions of new users worldwide to the power of Linux," said Amanda McPherson, vice president of marketing and developer programs at the Linux Foundation. "Many of the technologies that people use everyday are based on Linux. We welcome DeviceVM as a new member and applaud its ongoing contributions."
